Jane Sloan, Shmuel Ben-Gad, and Frank Blaakmeer
A Bresson Bibliography
Jane Sloan is the Media Librarian at Rutgers University Libraries, and former
Cinema-Television Librarian at University of Southern California Libraries.
She is the author of the sole Bresson-bibliography ever published in bookform [Sloan 1983]
which has been out of print for some time. The annotated bibliography is now available in digital form, here.
Shmuel Ben-Gad, besides being an ardent devotee of the films of Robert
Bresson, is a reference and collection development librarian at the
George Washington University in Washington, DC.
Frank Blaakmeer (1960) studied theology at the State University of Groningen,
the Netherlands. He wrote a masters thesis on the religious interpretation
of Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker, and published several articles in Dutch
on cinema-related subjects. Currently he is teaching mathematics at a highschool
in The Hague.

Introduction
It is impossible to find them all, but there must be up to 3000 books, (newspaper) articles and internet resources about the work of
Robert Bresson. This bibliography strives to be as complete as possible, including all the books and articles relevant to the study of
Robert Bresson's work. We do not actively search to include all relevant newspaper articles and reviews, but we tend to mention them
if and when they draw our attention. We do not include references to general encyclopedias, unless they are of special interest.
The main sources for the bibliography are Jane Sloan's bibliography published in: [ Sloan 1983] and
Shmuel Ben-Gad's more recent bibliographies published as [ Ben-Gad 1993, 2000a, 2000b].
Additional entries were found by the authors and contributors using references found in books, articles and on websites. We cannot ask every
author of these works for permission to use their results. If citations are not part of a work that has specific and solely bibliographical
intentions, we see them as being part of the public domain and feel free to use them. In almost all instances citations can be found
in more than one source (e.g.: library catalogues on the internet) so that it is safe to say that in those instances there is no
copyright on citation.
The bibliography consists of two parts. You are now in the systematical edition, in which entries are put in several categories (see above
in the Index). Citations of articles are put in the category 'articles' whenever they are of a general nature, cover more than one of the
films, or when there is no clue to what the article is about. Articles that cover more than one of the films are included in the section 'Articles'
and in the sections referring to the relevant films. This means that in the systematical edition there are many 'doubles'. For an idea of the actual
scope of the bibliography please visit the alphabetical section (see below).
The category 'monographs' includes all works issued on Robert Bresson in 'bookform', excluding special issues of periodicals. 'Monograph' does
not necessarily mean 'book-lenght study', though it generally does. A seperate category is devoted to academic publications. Another category lists
reviews of the books in the Monograph-section.
The category 'interviews' includes all the interviews we could find, even if they are part of an article with broader scope. In these instances, the
citation is entered twice. Monographs that focus on a specific film are also entered twice, once under 'monographs', and once in the category
referring to the film.
A seperate strictly alphabetical list of entries can be found here.
Whenever an author has two or more publications in the same year, the publications are given distinct quotes of the year of publishing by
using letters (2008a, 2008b instead of 2008, 2008). The only exception occurs when part(s) of a work and the work itself are seperate entries (see, e.g., [Baugh 1997]).
There are two kinds of hyperlink in the bibliography. A 'year' in blue links to the relevant annotation in Jane Sloan's annotated bibliography,
whereas any other text in blue links to an url on the www. Links to the www are checked on publishing, but may of course disappear without trace. They may however often still be recovered by means of the WayBackMachine at archive.org.
